Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from (carbon) and (gas). The Chinese character (thán) is composed of (thạch, rock, chemical radical for "non-gassy" nonmetal elements) + (thán, coal), due to the carbonic makeup of coal. See also than đá (coal) and Than Đá (Carboniferous) which are from Chinese 石炭 (thạch thán, literally rocky coal). Compare Chinese 炭氣 / 炭气 (thán khí).
