Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *k-lən, from Proto-Austroasiatic *tlan. Cognate with Muong tlăn, Pacoh tulán, Khmer ថ្លាន់ (thlan, “python”), Bahnar klăn (“python”), Mon ကၠန် (klɔn, “python”), Car Nicobarese tu-lān (“python”). Possibly a doublet of thằn lằn.
Attested as tlan in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
