Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *k-lən, from Proto-Austroasiatic *tlan. Cognate with Muong tlăn, Pacoh tulán, Khmer ថ្លាន់ (thlan, python), Bahnar klăn (python), Mon ကၠန် (klɔn, python), Car Nicobarese tu-lān (python). Possibly a doublet of thằn lằn.

Attested as tlan in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
