Metathetical alteration of Old Galician-Portuguese torvon (possibly influenced by troar (to thunder)), from Vulgar Latin *turbōnem (whirlwind), alteration of Latin turbinem. Compare Galician trebón, Spanish turbión (archaic or dialectal turbón). Doublet of turbina, from ultimately the same Latin root, through French, and turbo.
