Etymology
Metathetical alteration of Old Galician-Portuguese torvon (possibly influenced by troar (“to thunder”)), from Vulgar Latin *turbōnem (“whirlwind”), alteration of Latin turbinem. Compare Galician trebón, Spanish turbión (archaic or dialectal turbón). Doublet of turbina, from ultimately the same Latin root, through French, and turbo.
