Etymology 1

Inherited from Old Norse [Term?]. Compare Icelandic þrúga f, Old Norse þrjúgr m, Swedish tryga f (snowshoe for a horse) and dialectal Swedish tryg m.

Erik Pontoppidan in Glossarium Norvagicum (1749) gives two different spellings: Mand-Trouviæ for a human snowshoe and Tryer (plural) for horse snowshoes. Attested in 1646 by Christen Jensøn as Tryer. Also attested by Jacob Nicolai Wilse (1780) in Spydeberg dialect spelled as Truer (plural). David Klim in the 17th century also gives Man-trøuwjæ as a separate term.
