From Proto-Italic *tundō, from Proto-Indo-European *tunédˢti, nasal-infix present from the root *(s)tewd-,[1] from *(s)tew- (“to push, hit”). Cognate with Old Irish do·tuit (“falls, crumbles”), Dutch stoten, German stoßen, English stot, Albanian tund.
