Sino-Vietnamese word from 社會主義, composed of 社會 (“society”) and 主義 (“-ism”), from Japanese 社會主義 (shakai shugi).

Earlier adopters of the term used it as a Sino-Vietnamese noun meaning "socialism" (although not exactly in the sense "the 'first', or lower, phase of communist society"^[1]) - with xã hội being the modifier and chủ nghĩa being the head -; it has been converted into an adjective and now strictly used as such. Meanwhile, chủ nghĩa xã hội (“socialism”) functions as a noun.
