Etymology
From Middle Dutch soge, suege, from Old Dutch *soga, from Proto-West Germanic *sugu. The regular form in Middle Dutch was soge with a back vowel, with fronted suege occurring only in the western dialects. The original form is still found dialectally as zoog.
