IMAP is the Internet Message Access Protocol, and is often used when connecting to a Gmail account from a third party application.

IMAP is the Internet Message Access Protocol. It is used to download messages from a mail server to a third party client, such as Outlook or Thunderbird, so that they can be viewed offline later, or just used as an alternative to the Gmail web interface.

Gmail's IMAP server is imap.gmail.com, which uses port 993 and SSL.
