From Middle High German Osteriche, from Old High German Ostarrîchi (attested since 996); a compound of an element meaning "east" (cognate to modern German Ost (“east”)) and rīhhi (“realm”) (modern German Reich (“realm”)).

Notes
The word is pronounced as if spelled Östereich, with a mid schwa /ə/ as the second vowel, rather than the open schwa /ɐ/, which is what the spelling suggests. Regionally however (including in Austria), any /ə/ can be lowered to [ɐ] when followed by /r/.
