Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gómos, a derivation of *gem- (to press together; to grasp) and so related to γέμω (gémō, to be full of), γέντο (génto, he/she grasped), Latin gemō (to sigh, groan) and Proto-Slavic *žęti (to press, squeeze).
