Inherited from Byzantine Greek μαθαίνω, form of μανθάνω (manthánō) from the past tense stem μαθ‑ (ἔμαθον) of ancient Ancient Greek verb μανθάνω (manthánō, “know, understand”) and metaplasm ‑αίνω.^[1]
