From Proto-Indo-European *pléh₁-dʰ-uh₁, from *pleh₁- (“to fill”). Related to πλήθω (plḗthō, “to be(come) full”) and πίμπλημι (pímplēmi, “to fill”). Cognate with Latin plēbēs, older form of plēbs.
