From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (to boil). Related to φῡ́ρω (phū́rō, to mix, jumble together).

Various folk etymologies connecting this word to πορφύρᾱ (porphúrā, purple) have been proposed, but none are plausible.
