τημελέω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Without a certain explanation. The semantic and formal similarity with μέλω (mélō, to care for) gave rise to several unsuccesful attempts to connect this verb to etymologically. Pisani suggested that τημέλεια (tēméleia) arose from *τηλε-μέλεια (*tēle-méleia) by syllabic dissimilation and originally meaning "to care from afar"; however, this is semantically unconvincing.
