τσιμπάω

Greek

Alternative forms

Etymology

Multiple options:

  • From τσιμπ(ώ) (tsimp(ó)) + -άω (-áo). Inherited from Byzantine Greek τσιμπῶ (tsimpô), from earlier *τσιμπίζω (*tsimpízō) via its aorist forms *τσιμπισ- (*tsimpis-), itself from *ἐξεμπίζω (*exempízō), from ἐξ- (ex-) + Ancient Greek ἐμπίς f (empís, mosquito) + -ίζω (-ízō),[1] objected as *ἐξεμπίζω or *εμπίζω are not attested in Byzantine Greek or the Southern Italy dialects.[2]
  • From Albanian cimb (sting).[2][3]
  • From Turkish çimdiklemek (to tweak).[4]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /t͡simˈba.o/ and in fast speech: /t͡siˈba.o/
  • Hyphenation: τσι‧μπά‧ω
