Inherited from Proto-Slavic *grana (cognate with dialectal or obsolete Bulgarian гран (gran)/гранка (granka)), from Proto-Indo-European, cognate with German Granne (“awn”), Old English granu (“moustache”) and Old Norse grǫn (“a pine tree”) (whence Danish gran (“spruce”)). Compare Old Norse grein (“branch”) (whence Danish gren).
