Etymology
From a defective verb е- (e-) + -ді (-dı), the root is from Proto-Turkic *er- (“to be”). Cognate with Kyrgyz эди (edi), Uzbek edi, Turkish idi.

Usage notes
- When conjugated (except in the third-person), the syllable -ді may be dropped in the colloquial speech:
- едім > ем
- едің > ең
- едік > ек
- In literary language, might be shortened to -ді (-dı) suffix and follow vowel harmony.
