Etymology

From a defective verb е- (e-) +‎ -ді (-dı), the root is from Proto-Turkic *er- (to be). Cognate with Kyrgyz эди (edi), Uzbek edi, Turkish idi.

  3. (with -ген (-gen) or -іп (-ıp)) Forms pluperfect tense
  4. (with -етін (-etın) or -уші (-uşı)) Forms pluperfect habitual tense

Usage notes

  • When conjugated (except in the third-person), the syllable -ді may be dropped in the colloquial speech:
    едім > ем
    едің > ең
    едік > ек
  • In literary language, might be shortened to -ді (-dı) suffix and follow vowel harmony.
