кирьга

Erzya

Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *kərga, whence also Moksha крга (krga). Likely borrowed from Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ (neck) or less likely from a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (to swallow, devour).

A connection with Proto-Finnic *kurkku (throat) has also been proposed, but considered doubtful.
