Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sьrpъ. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic срьпъ (srĭpŭ, “sickle”), Bulgarian сърп (sǎrp), Czech srp, Polish sierp, Yiddish סערפּ (serp); and with Latvian sirpis, Greek ἅρπη (hárpē), Latin sarpō.
