Old Armenian

Etymology

From *տի- (*ti-), from Proto-Indo-European *déh₁. Cognate with Latin (from, without), as in dē-bilis (without strength, incapable). See also տիեզերք (tiezerkʻ).[1]

Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *dus- (bad).[2]

Prefix

տ- • (t-)

  1. a negative prefix
    տ- (t-) + ‎գեղ (geł, beauty) → ‎տգեղ (tgeł, ugly)
    տ- (t-) + ‎հաճ (hač, satisfaction) → ‎տհաճ (thač, displeased)
    տ- (t-) + ‎քնեմ (kʻnem, to sleep) → ‎տքնեմ (tkʻnem, to be vigilant, watchful)

Usage notes

Unproductive already in Old Armenian.
