إسا

North Levantine Arabic

Etymology

Contraction of الساعة (is-sāʔa, the hour). Compare Maltese issa, Iraqi Arabic هسا (hassa, now) and Egyptian Arabic لسا (lissa, still).

Adverb

إسا • (ʔissa)

  1. (Druze, South Lebanon) now
    Synonym: هلق (hallaʔ)
  2. (Lebanon) still; just
Synonyms: لسا (lissa) (Syria), بعد (baʕd)

Usage notes

  • The sense "still; just" attaches to personal pronouns by extending the stem to إسَّاتـ (ʔissāt-), as in إسَّاتنا (ʔissātna, we’re still..., we’ve just...).
