Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Iranian *pari-yāhana-,[1] from Proto-Iranian *pari- (around, peri-) + *yaHh- (to girdle, gird). The former prefix is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pári, from Proto-Indo-European *péri, while the latter component is from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s- (to gird), and cognate with Ancient Greek ζώννυμι (zṓnnumi, to gird) and ζώνη (zṓnē, belt, sash) (whence English zone), Lithuanian júosta (band, stripe), Proto-Slavic *pȍjāsъ (girdle), and Albanian gjesh (to gird).[2]
