Borrowed from Classical Persian عَقل ('aql), from Arabic عَقْل (ʕaql). First attested as Old Hindi अकलि (akali). Cognate with Bengali আকল (akol), Gujarati અક્કલ (akkal), Marathi अक्कल (akkal), Punjabi ਅਕ਼ਲ (aqal) / عَقل (ʻaql).
