Etymology

Related to the Sanskrit clan of words कठिन (kaṭhina, “hard”), कठोर (kaṭhora, “sharp”), and कड्डति (kaḍḍati), whence Prakrit कढिण (kaḍhiṇa), कट्ठिण (kaṭṭhiṇa), and कढोर (kaḍhora, “hard”). Of uncertain and possibly Dravidian origin, for which compare Tamil கட்டு (kaṭṭu, “to build, harden”) and Telugu గట్టి (gaṭṭi, “hard”). Cognate with Nepali कड़ा (kaṛā). Bengali কড়া (koṛa), and Odia କଡ଼ା (kaṛā).
