Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘝𑘩𑘿𑘮𑘰𑘝 (talhāta, “palm”),[1] from Prakrit *𑀢𑀮𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣 (*talahattha). By surface analysis, तळ (taḷ) + हात (hāt).
