From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tā́nas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tā́nas, from Proto-Indo-European *tónos, from *ten- (“to stretch, extend”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τόνος (tónos), Ossetian тӕн (tæn). Compare also English tone, a Latin borrowing, ultimately from Ancient Greek.
