Etymology

Related to Avestan 𐬚𐬭𐬁 (θrā, to protect, root), which would point to a Proto-Indo-Iranian *traH (to protect), though with further etymology unclear. Mayrhofer tentatively suggests derivation from a Proto-Indo-European *treh₂-, which appears potentially related to the common root *terh₂- (to pass through).[1]
