Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑀸𑀠 (dāḍha), 𑀤𑀁𑀞 (daṃṭha), from Sanskrit दंष्ट्र (daṃṣṭra, “fang, tusk; beard”), from the root दंश् (daṃś). Compare Punjabi ਜਾੜ੍ਹ / جاڑھ (jāṛh).
