Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑀸𑀮𑀻 (dālī), from Sanskrit दाल (dāla), itself from दलति (dalati, “he splits”); see दल् (dal, “to split, burst”). Cognate with Braj दारि (dāri), Marathi डाळ (ḍāḷ).
