Etymology
Cognate with Proto-Iranian *bād- (Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌-𐬠𐬁𐬜𐬀 (auui-bāδa, “due to pressure”), Khwarezmian [script needed] (ʾn-bʾzy-, “to cause to curdle”)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰādʰ-.[1] The Proto-Indo-European root is uncertain: perhaps a lengthened grade or lexicalized o-grade of *bʰedʰ- (“to bend, press, oppress”); or back-formed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰadʰ-, zero-grade of *bʰandʰ- (“to bind, tie”); or from another root entirely, such as *bʰeh₁dʰ- (“to oppress, torment”);[2] compare Proto-Slavic *bě̄dà (“trouble, adversity”). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
