Thematised from यूस् (yū́s), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yéwHs (soup, broth). Cognate with Latin iūs (gravy, broth, sauce) (whence English juice), Lithuanian jū́šė (fish soup), Russian уха (uxa, fish soup), Proto-Germanic *justaz (cheese).
