A late-attested root, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rak- (“to prepare”), and related to Persian رخت (raxt, “tapestry, rugs, goods”), Khotanese [script needed] (raha-, “dress”). The Indo-Iranian root is traditionally derived further from Proto-Indo-European *rek- (“to prepare”), and connected to Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (rahnjan, “to reckon, count”), Proto-Slavic *reťi (“to say”), and Lithuanian rė̃kti (“to cry out”). However, some of these potential cognates (particularly 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽) are formally and semantically doubtful.
