Etymology

    From Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyḱ- (scratch, line), an extension of *h₁rey- (scratch). Cognate with English row, Ancient Greek ἐρείκω (ereíkō, to rend, bruise, pound), Lithuanian riekti (to slice).
