From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śiṣṭás (“left over”), from *śiṣ- (“to remain”), of uncertain origin. Compare also Mari šište (“beeswax”), Mordvin šta (“beeswax”), inherited from a Proto-Indo-Aryan borrowing.
