Etymology

Probably borrowed from Punjabi ਸੁੰਨ (sunn, numb, insensible), itself borrowed from Sanskrit शून्य (śūnyá, blank, empty, destitute of; void, zero), otherwise inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀼𑀡𑁆𑀡 (suṇṇa, empty) without cluster simplification, from the same Sanskrit etymon. If inherited, possibly also influenced by सन्न (sann, stunned, stupefied, speechless (with fear or dismay)).

Doublet of शून्य (śūnya), सुन्ना (sunnā), and सूना (sūnā).
