Etymology

Monier-Williams suggests the inheritance from older *sthalnú, which would explain the retroflexion of the sibilant through Fortunatov's law (for which compare भाषा (bhāṣā)). Compare स्थल (sthala, “flat surface”). Mayrhofer instead derives from स्था (sthā) +‎ -नु (-nu), with spontaneous retroflexion.
