From มหา (má-hǎa, “great; high”) +‎ วิทยาลัย (wít-tá-yaa-lai, “college”, literally “abode of knowledge”); ultimately from Sanskrit महाविद्यालय (mahāvidyālaya, literally “great house of knowledge”), from महा (mahā, “great; high”) + विद्यालय (vidyālaya, “academy; school”, literally “house of knowledge”). Cognate with Khmer មហាវិទ្យាល័យ (mɔɔhaavɨtyiəlay); Lao ມະຫາວິທະຍາໄລ (ma hā wi tha nyā lai).
