From Old Khmer តេរ៑ (ter, “to go on foot; to march; to walk; etc”), Cognate with Modern Khmer ដើរ (daə, “to walk”). Lao ເດີນ (dœ̄n), Lü ᦵᦤᦲᧃ (doen). Extended as ดำเนิน (dam-nəən).

เดิน • (dəən) (abstract noun การเดิน)

1. to move on or as if on foot: to walk, to step, to run, to flow, etc.

   เขา  ―  dəən kǎo  ―  to hike (lit. walk mountain)

   กองทัพด้วยท้อง

   gɔɔng-táp dəən dûai tɔ́ɔng

   An army marches on its stomach.

2. to cause to go or move, to set in motion: to run, to operate, to propel, to steer, to carry (out, on, etc), to drive, to direct, etc.

   ทัพ  ―  dəən táp  ―  to march an army

   เครื่อง  ―  dəən krʉ̂ʉang  ―  to run a machine

   ธุระ  ―  dəən tú-rá  ―  to run a business

4. to be in motion; to be in operation.

   A clock is not working.

   kroong-gaan dəən nâa

   A project [will] move forwards.

5. to travel; to journey.

6. (of vehicles) to provide the service of, usually as a business.

   รถ  ―  dəən rót  ―  to carry out a car [service business]

7. (archaic) to visit in order to inspect or examine; to inspect or examine on the spot or on site.

   นา  ―  dəən naa  ―  to visit a paddy

   สวน  ―  dəən sà-wá-ná-  ―  to visit a garden

8. (archaic) to carry or bring, usually as a messenger.

   หมาย  ―  dəən mǎai  ―  to serve a writ

9. (archaic) to chant or recite, usually in a continuous manner.
