Etymology 1

From Old Burmese ခ္လွတ် (khlwat), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/s-lwat (to free; release; slip; dislocate) (Schuessler, 2007). Synchronically analyzed as the causative of ကျွတ် (kywat). Cognate with Tibetan གློད་པ (glod pa, loosen, relax, slacken), Tibetan ཧློད་པ (hlod pa, loose, relaxed), Lepcha ᰒᰤᰦᰳ (flját), ᰒᰤᰩᰳ (fljót), လွှတ် (hlwat), Chinese (OC *l̥ʰoːd, *l'oːd).
