From Proto-Karen *thaŋᴮ (“to ascend”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *tVŋ (“to rise; to raise”). Cognate with Bwe Karen tha, Eastern Pwo ထင်း (tháɴ), Pa'o Karen ထင်ႏ, Western Kayah ꤓꤛꤢ꤬ (htyà).
