ထင်း
Burmese
Etymology
The "firewood" sense is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *təŋ (“pine; fir”); compare Old Chinese 蒸 (OC *kljɯŋ, “brushwood”).
The other senses of "to stain" and "to be conspicuous" are likely related to each other, though whether they are related to the "firewood" sense (perhaps via sense development "burnt firewood" > "conspicuous sign of a camp" > "stain") is unclear. MED groups them together, however. Alternatively, they are etymologically separate, and instead related to ထင် (htang, “to be visible”).
