A borrowing from the family of words represented by Mingrelian ზოკი (zoḳi), ძოკი (ʒoḳi), Old Armenian ձագ (jag), Classical Syriac ܙܓܐ (zāggā), Persian زاق (zâq). The immediate source of the Georgian is uncertain.
