Etymology

A borrowing from the family of words represented by Georgian ზაქი (zaki), Old Armenian ձագ (jag), Classical Syriac ܙܓܐ (zāggā), Persian زاق (zâq). The various alternative forms reflect different chronological layers of borrowing, the forms with -ო- (-o-) being the oldest ones as they exhibit the *ao sound change in Zan. For the forms with ძ- (ʒ-) compare ձագ (jag). The form ზაქი (zaki) is borrowed from Georgian ზაქი (zaki).
