ὄγκος

Ancient Greek

Pronunciation

Etymology 1

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁onḱos (burden), from *h₁neḱ- (to take away). It has also been claimed that all attestations can be understood from a meaning "swelling", from earlier "curvature", and thus ultimately identical to 'Etymology 2'.

Compare with the semantics of Latin mōlēs.
