タイ or たい • (tai) 

1. 鯛: sea bream

   タイ(鯛(たい))は、めでたいの"たい"につながることから、縁(えん)起(ぎ)のよいものと考(かんが)えられています。

   Tai (tai) wa, medetai no "tai" ni tsunagaru koto kara, engi no yoi mono to kangaerareteimasu.

   Sea bream (tai) is considered good luck because tai is the ending of the word medetai (auspicious).

• As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary).
