Small seal script |
Pictogram (象形) – a pig-like creature (豕) with fur. In the seal script (Shuowen), it shows the head of a pig (彑) on top, as well as the fur and hooves of the creature on the bottom.
There are two other possible origins (Chi, 2010):
- Corruption of 豸 (OC *rdeːʔ, *deʔ).
- Related to 𢁛, a corruption of 衰 (OC *sʰrol, *srul) used as a rebus character for 殺 (OC *sreːds, *sreːd).
