Verb
同意
- (transitive) to agree with (sth.); to consent to; to concur with (sth.)
Usage notes
Chinese learners tend to erroneously use this verb like:
- *我同意你。 ― Wǒ tóngyì nǐ. ― (lit.) I agree (with) you.
- *我跟你同意。 ― Wǒ gēn nǐ tóngyì. ― (lit.) I with you agree.
In Chinese, it is used to agree with things (opinions, ideas, plans etc), rather than persons. The first sentence above sounds incomplete, roughly like "I agree with your". Furthermore, as a transitive verb, it takes its object directly (which however might be omitted/implied), not via a preposition. To say "I agree with you" in general, one could add 看法 (kànfǎ, “view/opinion”), 觀點/观点 (guāndiǎn, “viewpoint, perspective”), or other more specific nouns.
