Derived as a 文字詞 (moji kotoba, “letter word”) from either 湯具 (yugu, literally “hot water + material”) or 湯巻 (yumaki, literally “hot water + wrap”), originally referring to a simple wrap around the wearer's loins when using a public bath or hot spring.^[1][2]
