Borrowed from English Holmes, with influence from Xiamen Hokkien in the translation by Huang Ding (黃鼎) and Zhang Zaixin (張在新). Initially in the form 福而摩司 [1902], changed to the current form in 《續包探案》 [1903]. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
