Pannonian Rusyn
Etymology
Inherited from Old Slovak -ova, -ová, feminine form of -ovy, -ový. Cognate with Czech -ová, Slovak -ova.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈɔva]
- Rhymes: -ɔva
- Hyphenation: ова
Suffix
-ова (-ova) f
- forms feminine equivalents of surnames
Usage notes
- Unlike in Czech and Slovak, female equivalents of surnames are usually not used when referring to a female person by her full name, instead using the masculine form (where it is indeclinable, e.g. кнїжка Ани Ковач (knjižka Ani Kovač, “the book of Ana Kovač”) instead of *кнїжка Ани Ковача (*knjižka Ani Kovača)). They are generally only used when the first name of the person is omitted, although there are some (dated) exceptions such as Гайдукова (Hajdukova). This is also sometimes done with masculine surnames and appending -ов (-ov), such as Джуджаров (Džudžarov) from Джуджар (Džudžar), however this is less common.
- In Czech and Slovak, when a surname ends in -ský, -sky, -cký or -cky, the feminine equivalent is -ská or -cká etc., i.e. the surname declines as an adjective.
But in Pannonian Rusyn, -ски (-ski) and -цки (-cki)-class surnames are treated as nouns and more often than not have noun-type declension, thus resulting in their feminine equivalents being -скова (-skova) and -цкова (-ckova) rather than -ска (-ska) and -цка (-cka), even though adjectives with these endings are still declined as such.
However, those feminine equivalent surnames are declined as feminine adjectives in Pannonian Rusyn, even though the masculine forms are not; see "Declension" for the adjectival declension.
This also applies to other surnames derived from adjectives, such as Гарди (Hardi); compare the feminine equivalent Гардийова (Hardijova) to Czech Hrdá, from Hrdý.
